OBX. um… if you say so
Uncategorized August 28th, 2002lately i can’t help but notice the number of cars with those oval white stickers circling a clever abbreviation for some location. i’ve always wondered what drives people to buy these and they seem to be especially common in nc. raleigh in particular has a high percentage of drivers displaying the oval ‘OBX’. in case you are immune to this or unaware its an abbreviation for ‘Outer Banks’ (even though there is no X in outer banks).
why do people display this sticker? is it to show the next driver that you enjoy the outer banks? well, who doesn’t like the outer banks? how could anyone not enjoy the beauty of these island treasures? this week i saw a particularly large version of the sticker that nearly spanned the entire width of the rear window of a dodge intrepid. i wonder if his motivation was to tell the world that he liked the outer banks more than the next guy b/c he sports a bigger sticker.
this week i’m going to purchase an OBX sticker and carefully mark a red bar across it (similar to the negative nascar stickers ‘no #23′). of course i love OBX but i’m curious to see if i’ll be rammed by an outer banks loving soccer mom in a chevy tahoe.

I have an OBX sticker, because I like the outer banks and because I was in a souvernier shop and couldn’t think of anything else to buy. Also I think it makes my jeep look cool. Thank you.

I think they are cool;but my husband thinks the elliptical decals should stand for OBnoXious, which he finds lots of the drivers in Raleigh!

I am from the Outer Banks and the OBX stickers used to be cool when it was only the locals of Dare county that had them. Now every sinlge car, mostly weekend worrior SUV’s from out of state, have them plastered all over. I know the guy that started the whole OBX sticker thing and he is a very cool guy. If for nothing else you should buy a sticker just to give him your money. But seriously to all the Outer Banks locals, the OBX stickers are a joke and just an easy way to spot and make fun of tourists and and Outer Banker wanna-be’s. So if you want to be cool, don’t get an OBX sticker unless you are from the Outer Banks. Buy an oval sticker about your hometown and try to be somewhat unique.

I have 2 oval stickers on my truck. One for Geocaching.com (”GEO”) and the other for Barenaked Ladies (”BNL”). I like the oval stickers when I know what the hell they are advertising. I saw one the other day that said “33.8″ What the heck is THAT all about???
We’re planning an April Trip to the OBX, and I promise I will not buy or fly an oval. Just for you.

Ya’ll are just upset at how popular the outer banks have become. It’s a family tourist attraction and you hate it. Go on down to Salvo, put on your hemp shoes and pretend your important while other people enjoy their vacations and their stickers. Have a nice day.

my family and i have been going to the outer banks for 22 years, and we have a sticker, but lately i’ve seen everybody with them… even up here in MAryland, its kinda sad. anyway, i think their cool nd i dont see the reason for all the controversy.

I bought just several. Why? Because I just came back from the Outer Banks and it is one of the most wonderful places in the world So when I get in my car to fight traffic with all these transplants here in Cary, I’ll think of the sticker and that peaceful, wonderful place. I also have a sticker of the Wave Riding Vehicles dolphin/wave logo for the same purpose.
And the question of the X in the acronym - “X” is pronouced the similar as “nks.” Think the slang for “thanks” that crops up a million times a day “thanx” or “tnx.” All I can say about that is, well, duh! It’s true each generation gets a bit thicker until they reach 40.
Too bad were don’t have an oval for CARY - Containment Area for Relocated Yankees - but then who the hell would want to get wistful over the Big Beige? Bunco anyone?
BTW- . As an NC Native, I’ll damn well put any sticker on my car from anyplace in my home state.

Well, first off we try to go to the Outer Banks, Ocracoke, every year to fish. Yeah, I love it there. 1)Why are we commenting on something that was written about back in 2002? 2)The ONLY thing an OBX sticker looks good on is an old beat up Jeep or truck that has been eat’n up by salt air over the years. That’s the kinda vehicle a TRUE OBX person drives.
People, if you put an OBX sticker on anything other than that, you pretty much look like a moran. Big, gas guzzling SUV’s do not represent the Ocracoke character, and it’s an insult to the true OBX locals to have an OBX sticker on one. Yeah, it sucks Ocracoke is becoming a tourist trap for the OBX wanna be’s. Hatteras is a joke now!!
If you drive an SUV newer than 1990, don’t have some rust on your car and sand in the floor board, and don’t turn your cell phone off on vacation, then STAY AWAY from Ocracoke. Go to Hatteras and hang with the “wanna be’s”.

I was born and raised in Pinehurst, NC and I’m 35 years old now. I have lived at the coast during the summers all my life. So, if I want an OBX sticker on my car, I am going to put one on.
I also love to go to Cape Lookout, Atlantic Beach, Carolina Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Kure Beach…etc…
OBX is a great place but dont get too cocky. There are other great NC beaches out there!

Remember how “steamer” trunks displayed stickers of where their owners had traveled? Same idea for cars. I display travel stickers on my car of the only two places I’ve visited (and continue to visit) that are of any importance to me: Ireland and the Outer Banks.
