Sync Windows Mobile Smartphone via Bluetooth with New ActiveSync
Smartphones May 13th, 2005Microsoft has released ActiveSync 4.0 and they fixed the problems associated with trying to sync a smartphone running Windows Mobile via bluetooth.
To sync via bluetooth:
1. Download the new version of ActiveSync (There is no need to first uninstall your old version. It recognizes the old version and upgrades it.)
2. Setup the bluetooth connection with ActiveSync (taken from new Active Sync help docs)
3. Make sure ActiveSync is running on your PC and from your phone select “Connect via Bluetooth”.
Voila!

I can not get activesync to work with my smt5600, I am run windows xp and outlook 2002, I keep getting a error message. can anyone help?

THANK YOU very much! It is pretty goofy that they include AS 3.7 with the phone, but IT WON’T WORK as you and I and others have learned after dinking around for several hours!!!! They should include a note with the phone “Hey, BT does not sync with Activesync, don’t waste your time.” But thank you for giving us the scoop, it worked EASY once I installed 4.0
I don’t understand why it seems so difficult to get info out of Cingular or Microsoft or Audiovox.
QUESTION: I don’t understand what services I am using when I use the internet, or mMode, or any other data services on this phone. How in the heck do I know what I will be billed? Until I see an explanation of the rates, I don’t dare use anything.
I used IE to give me a WAP format weather page. Is this going to cost me 10 cents? 10 dollars? I bought 4MB for $8 / month or something like that, but how do I know how much I have used?
I know, these are questions for Cingular, but they aren’t a fraction as helpful as you are!!

Your tutorial is excellent. However, after following the above instructions I was still unable to get my Audiovox Smartphone connected. I kept getting the error ‘Cannot connect to pc’. What finally did it was a setting in ActiveSync on the PHONE. Select options, then select advanced, and finally select Bluetooth (not usb). After I did this it worked.

Now that I can sync with bluetooth, is there a method to make it AUTO-sync like it does when I plug in the USB cable?

Though this has proved informative, the only com ports that my device recognizes are six and seven, and the only ports my PC sees are in the double digits. I am still unable to set up BT sync between my PC and my device. Do you have any suggestions?

I still can’t get my SMT5600 working even with 4.0. My guess is from Candi’s post that BT is not even an option under my advanced, only use and baud speeds. I followed this to a “T” but I’m obviously missing something!

OK… had a glimmer of hope when I realized I had to get Activesync 4.0 (had 3.8). Followed the instructions, still “unable to connect”. Error message is “Unable to connect. Verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct, and try again.”
ANY ideas???

I have the same problems with getting my Audiovox SMT 5600 to work with Bluetooth. Tried the above guides including download ActiveSync 4.0 and trying to choose BT from the Option under Advance (and no BT option is shown). Follow the link, download the guide, and follow the step-by-step instruction (it is very clear - make sure you don’t take any short-cuts, and you will have your phone set up to ActiveSync via BT. I worked for me - like MAGIC!!!

This worked perfectly for me. I was having trouble with activesync 3.8 (the one microsoft publishes as latest I think). activesync 4.0 solved the problem. Is this a beta from microsoft or something ? I don’t see them publicising it.

Thanks a TON! One other suggestion to add / tip: If you have had your phone connected via bluetooth before - delete the pairing before you attempt. This fixed my issue on my MPx220. Also, if you initiate the sync via your phone (which you have to) it seems that you “select” sync with bluetooth - this is actually the begin to sync with bluetooth so after it’s pushed it will begin (again assuming that prior pairings are gone… Thanks again for the link for MS ActiveSync 4.0 - it seems to be more stable then 3.7.1 or 3.8 (and it looks better too!).

Question: does anyone else have the problem with Activesync syncing an increasing number of mail every day? (even though there’s nothing else in the inbox). Every day the number goes up….50..60…70 e-mail messages and now it’s near 200 messages and takes a few minutes to sync. Any ideas?

Thanks for the Tip on the MPx220. Deleting the original pairing worked great. I simply created another, went to the active sync option and selected connect via bluetooth. Again, many many thanks…

I was expecting something more..
Could you suggest the best way to sync all the things on my Windows Mobile to the PC (from the mobile to the PC).
The only way I see is to write a program by myself (RAPI + MobileOutlook + many line of code). Do you know if there is a third party?
I need to syncro MMM; SMS, Pictures, Voice notes, other files in the local file systems..

hmmm… this definitely helped.
I had to
1) delete all bluetooth devices/com-ports in the phone
2) delete all bluetooth devices/com-ports in the pc
3) then follow instructions (after upgrading AS, Doh!)
hardly the PNP as hoped…

I’m using a motorola MPx220
For me the trick was (as others) I had to delete and recreate the binding. This time I initiated the partnership from the device (previously I started from the desktop.)
I’m using a IOGear bluetooth adaptor with “stock” XP/SP2 drivers …
I played around some more after being successful and found I dont need to open a COM port at all. Using ActiveSync 4.1 it has a “Bluetooth” connection setting. so I deleted the COM7 port and tried again, perfect.
Only thing is now I cant UNCONNECT my phone from AS without pulling out the bluetooth adaptor … oh well , not really a problem !
(Or you can go to Connection Settings and UNcheck the box next to Bluetooth)

i cannot sync my pocket pc via bluetooth. i have been working on this for 3 weeks. sprint tech support are not helpful at all. i need to know how to establish an outgoing com port. SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE. i am so pisssed right now, because i just cannot figure it out.

my MDA from Tmobile not recognized in sync center in Windows Vista. Tmobile Techs do not have a clue about what to do. I had it working before but per their instructions I deleted the partnership and now it does not work and all they give me is excuses. Someone help me cus i can’t sync my phone with my computer.

Note: Microsoft ActiveSync works only with Windows XP SP2 or earlier. If you have Windows Vista, your synchronization settings will be managed through the Windows Mobile Device Center. Windows Mobile Device Center is available through the Website above
