Audiovox SMT 5600 SmartPhone from AT&T Wireless

November 5th, 2004 Tony Leave a comment Go to comments

I had to replace my phone recently and after much research I settled on the Audiovox SMT 5600. This phone is incredible. The processor is fast and the data comes in pretty fast from AT&T so surfing the web is truly an enjoyment. The browser handles plain HTML websites beautifully.

The level of customization that comes with Windows Mobile 2003 is unlike anything I’ve experienced with a cell phone thus far. I even edited the standard homescreen from AT&T. I replaced the “mMode” links to URLs I actually care about (Google, raleighlist movie listings, Google news, and a personal links page).

The only disappointment so far is that synchronizing contacts, email, and calendar via Bluetooth is nearly impossible. Microsoft ActiveSync does not support Bluetooth syncing but I was able to get it to work. You have to jump through a bunch of hoops to make ActiveSync use a Serial Cable for syncing and set the COM port of the serial cable to match the COM port for Bluetooth syncing on the phone. Once you are connected it works beautifully but as soon as you walk out of range the link is severed and it is difficult to get it connected again. I’ve given up and use the USB cable only for sync and moving files.

UPDATE ON BLUETOOTH SYNCING : New version of ActiveSync solves the problem!

Here is what raleighlist.org Chapel Hill movie listings looks like in the phone browser:

Everything else I like/dislike about the SMT-5600:
* MSN Messanger is nice and fast
* The camera takes darn good pictures in the daytime
* The camera takes lousy pictures in the low light
* Windows Media 10 plays video and music as smooth as a PC
* I just bought a 512 MB miniSD for lots of storage
* Photo caller ID is handy
* Voice Dialing is much more accurate than the Samsung I used to have
* Camcorder takes pretty darn good videos for such a tiny device
* Sound quality when making calls is good
* Battery life is great
* Get the unlimited data for $25. The other plans are too small.
* Cell phone can be tethered to a laptop for a mobile internet connection
* No car charger is currently available
* Can receive and dial (voice dial) wirelessly with Bluetooth headset
* Some apps don’t have a quit option in the menu and they have to be killed in the Task Manager

Does anyone get a crackling noise when making calls. I’ve had my phone for 8 months and it just started doing this. Sometimes I can hardly hear the call.Sometime it crackles then stops when the call is answered.

I have a SMT5600 and it’s great, but I have a problem with the software. It’s stuck in the headphone profile and I can’t get it to go to normal or speakerphone or anything except headphone.

I thought a Hard Reset would help, but I can’t find any instructions on how to do that.

    Can anyone help me, Please!

    Thanks!

I turn my phone on and it says data crashes. Is there any way around this without sending it in?

I had the problem with the phone being stuck in headset mode. It was actually a hardware problem. The headphone jack contact was stuck. I could get it to the normal profile with a needle but it went back to headset when I pulled the needle. I got my phone replaced by Cingular.

My phone is stuck in being locked. How can I reboot it. The left softkey is not really working. When I press it while the screen is dark it comes back on but the left soft key still shows the command “unlock” Ana ideas on how to fix this?

From the above, I have a SMT 5600 and it was stuck in the Headset profile mode. I talked to a co-worker who had found a fix and it involves uploading a file named Reset_Profile_REG.exe to the phone and resetting the profile. It took a matter of a minute and I am back in business. I don’t see this file on the net anywhere, but if you post your e-mail address here, I will check periodically and can e-mail you the file to try it out.

I just completed the switch from AT&T to Cingular. (grumble) haha. its “ok” but unlocking my phone has, over a day now, finally froze up the phone when i start it up and each time I reboot it. The Unlock button for entering in my password is on the screen. And it pretty much stays lit for a long time.I can’t do ANYTHING but take out the battery to reset it.

    Any ideas?

I’ve had the SMT 5600 for about 6 months, I have purchased several car chargers but none seem to work. The phone will light up when you plug the usb adapter in, but no charging icon comes up. Leaving it connected and looking at the power management shows that the phone is still losing power. It does charge on the original home charger and on USB connections on my PCs with ActiveSync. I have noticed that many of you have written to just go get any charger, but I’ve been through 3 now and am wondeing if there is an option that I am not setting.

Stuck in headset profile. Sounds odd, but this has worked twice for me. Gently push a metal pin (or paper clip) into headphone socket. This apparently discharges the voltage between in the connector which makes it think the headphone plug is still inserted.

I’ve read someplace on the microsoft website that you could use there street and trips 2006 with GPS which includes software to download to the smt5600. Anybody ever done this and where did you find the bluetooth device for the phone?

  15. Jay
    February 14th, 2006 at 22:15 | #15

Vic – the car charger needs to output 1000 mAmps. Many (like those for razr phone) with same miniusb will only output 400mA which will not charge the SMT5600, same is needed if you want to buy another wall charger. Following is a car charger I found that worked:www.1800mobiles.com/audiovox-clc5600-
    car-charger.html.
One other simple inexpensive trick I found that works great (if you happen to have a car with a cassette deck) – cassette adaptor (with $3 Radio Shack stereo to stereo mini/micro adaptor plug, plugged into the headphone jack on the phone) allows phone speakers to be used for handsfree car use, and mp3 music on the sim card also plays well through car speakers. Good luck.

Jay – you are a life save, thankyou so much! Nice tip on the mini adapter plug also!

Regarding Google email, i went to Google and followed their instructions for mobile devices. The most important thing i found was to change your google profile to allow POP3! I tried and tried and couldn’t figure out what was wrong…LOL. I can now get aol and google mail. I was also able to change my settings to access the web using T-Mobile. HOT. Much better than Cingular. Phone reception the same. the only problem is that my phone constantly says it’s roaming, but it’s no biggie because T-Mobile doesn’t charge for roaming. By the way, I was able to unlock my phone and get a sim card from T-mobile. The only cost was the line activation charge.

My phone WAS stuck in headset mode. The “gently wiggle a paperclip in the headset hole” worked to fix the problem. The phone sometimes does not detect when the headset is unplugged.

If your phone is stuck in headset mode try Sean’s suggestion of gently putting a pin or clip into the jack to discharge voltage or something.

I tried it and it worked perfectly. no need for an executable.

Hi all, I was an AT&T customer and received my SMT5600 when I was an AT&T customer. Recently downloaded Cingular Xpressmail client. It works fantastic with Calendar. However, I can’t see email. I can see that e-mail is being downloaded on the home screen. The issue is I can’t find it. If I click on the home screen link for Xpressmail it brings up the e-mail account screen but does not find the Xpressmail account. Can anyone help me find the Xpressmail account or show me how to set it up? I don’t know what POP account to use…
